Conservation & Gilding

I have specialised in conserving, repairing and restoring gilded objects ranging from frames and furniture to reliquaries and gilded ceilings since 1999.

Working for museums, churches, stately homes, state buildings and private clients, the techniques I use are traditional and are to a museum standard. I conserve the original where possible, whilst reconstructing missing ornament when needed, and toning the new gold to match the original gilding.

Based in my studio in Belstone, near Okehampton in Devon, I am an associate member of ICON (The Institute of Conservation).

Training & Experience

After graduating in the History of Drawing and Printmaking with Applied Science at Camberwell Art School, I worked for 2 years in oil painting conservation. I worked in Naples for 8 years on gilded objects such as organ lofts, ceilings, furniture and statues for museums, the Royal Palace and churches.

Returning to Britain, I worked for 3 years at Arnold Wiggins frame makers in London, repairing old frames or gilding replica frames for museums, collections and private clients.

In 1999 I established Guyon Gilding and have since then been working independently all over the UK for historic and stately homes, museums, private clients and dealers.

Conservation

My approach is to try to conserve the original gilding and remove overlayering if possible, revealing original structural definition. Traditional techniques are used, they are in keeping with the existing surface, are reversible and are to museum standard.

Photographic and written records are taken. Knowledge of developments and techniques are kept up to date by attendance of conferences and contact with other fellow professionals.

Frames

I work on all periods and styles of picture and mirror frames.

The wooden structure of the frame is treated as necessary, and missing wooden ornament can be recarved. Moulded ornament is replaced by taking moulds and recasting. Gentle cleaning of the gilded surface ensures the build up of dust and dirt is removed, without affecting the gilded surface. If possible, over layers of paint or gesso are delicately removed to reveal the original gold and structural definition.

Gilding is applied where necessary and worn back and toned down to match the original.

An oil painting conservation service is also available.

Furniture

I work on all types of antique and reproduction gilded furniture, including tables, chairs, sofas, beds and internal structures such as pelmets and light stands.

The techniques used are the same as for frame repair:

The wooden structure is treated as necessary and missing ornament can be recarved. Lost decoration is replaced by taking moulds and recasting. Gentle cleaning of the gilded surface ensures the build up of dust and dirt is removed. If possible, over layers of paint or gesso are delicately removed to reveal the original gold and structural definition.

Gilding is integrated to match existing finishes.

New and Reproduction Gilding

Bespoke frames can be made up to fit an existing picture or mirror. A wide selection of frame sections is available to choose from. The gilded finish can then be chosen; anything from matching an antique finish to leaving as new.

Other objects that can be gilded include tables, chairs, sofas, pelmets and beds.

Architectural Gilding

Architectural gilding can be cleaned on site. Oil or water gilding is used to bring back the gilded finish on worn skirting boards, dado rails, shutters, doors, ceilings or any other kind of structural decoration.

Missing areas of ornament can be reconstructed and reintegrated.

Commissioning

Treatments and alternatives are discussed, free of charge, to ensure the piece receives the correct attention according to its age and use. Times scales and costs are always made clear and agreed.

On completion, maintenance and care of the piece will be advised upon, to ensure its long term stability.

In the event of fire damage or flooding, an immediate call out service is available, to advise on the correct course of action.

An oil painting conservation service is also available.
